Counterstrain is a technique that was developed by Osteopath Lawrence Jones in 1955. It is a simple technique that is used to release muscles in a gentle way, with minimal discomfort. It may be performed if your Osteopath finds a tender point in one of your muscles, these are known as trigger points. Your Osteopath will position your muscle into a relaxed position so that the tenderness you are experiencing when the trigger point is pushed is minimized. You will be held in this position for approximately 60-90 seconds. Your Osteopath will then return your body to the starting position and re-evaluate the trigger point, at which time the tenderness should have significantly reduced.

Our Osteopaths at Victoria Sports and Rehabilitation Clinic can combine counterstrain with other Osteopathic techniques to develop the best treatment outcome for your condition.
